IPHRC strongly condemns the closing of Al Aqsa Mosque compound by Israeli occupying authorities, and calls for its immediate, full and unrestricted reopening, enabling the Palestinians and all Muslims to exercise their right to freedom of religion

Date: 7/16/2017

The OIC Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission (IPHRC) is following with great concern the closure of Al Aqsa Mosque by the Israeli occupying authorities, and squarely condemns this egregious violation that violates the rights of Muslims to pray in one of the most revered holiest Islamic sites. No excuse or pretext is worth the recent closure of Al-Aqsa as it squarely violates the obligations of Israel under international law as the occupying power. The Commission further notes that one of the key reasons for the rising tensions in the Al Aqsa surroundings comes in the aftermath of growing attacks on Al-Aqsa by extremist Israeli settler leaders and groups, under Israeli police surveillance and protection.

The Commission recalled that the recently adopted UNESCO resolution affirmed that the entire Al Aqsa Mosque and the Holy Sanctuary is an Islamic Holy site, dedicated for worship and a part and parcel of the world Cultural Heritage Site. The resolution has also stressed that all measures taken by Israel, the occupying authority, against this fact are considered illegal under international law. The Commission calls for the immediate and full reopening of Al-Aqsa Mosque to all Muslim worshipers with no restrictions. It also calls on the Israeli occupying power to uphold its obligation to ensure the sanctity of and free access to the Christian and Muslim Holy Sites in the Occupied East Jerusalem at all times.

The Commission also called on all OIC Member States to launch a joint action to protect al-Haram al-Sharif – which houses the Al-Aqsa mosque, Islam's third-holiest site, and to take lead in providing political, economic, and diplomatic support, at all levels, to the Palestinian people in their struggle to exercise their inalienable right to self-determination for the establishment of their own independent, viable and contiguous state, with Al -Quds Al-Shareef as its capital including their unquestionable right to return to their homes and property, as decided in various UN resolutions, and guaranteed by International law.
