IPHRC Message on ‘World Interfaith Harmony Week- 2016’ Calls upon implementation of international consensus mechanisms to reinforce linkages between cultural and religious diversity and universal values to combat all forms of hatred, xenophobia and acts of violence.

Date: 2/1/2016

OIC Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission (IPHRC), while commemorating the ‘World Interfaith Harmony Week’, joins the international community in upholding the shared values of peace, human dignity and mutual respect, which are preached by all the world’s great religions including Islam.

Today’s increasingly globalized and inter connected world is witnessing demographic, ideological, economic and political transformations, which present humanity with unique opportunities and challenges. The problems of extremism and cultural and religious intolerance, threatening the peace and social cohesion of many societies, emanate from identity crises and ignorance about others that turns into fear and stereotyping leading to intolerance, discrimination and violence. This situation warrants working together for promoting dialogue and understanding among cultures, faiths and civilizations ensuring respect for and the exercise and enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms by all in a manner that respect for diversity becomes a shared heritage of mankind.

Islam is a religion that promotes compassion, coexistence, tolerance and peace in its teachings in all aspects of one’s individual and collective life. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “None of you has faith [in God] until you love for your neighbor what you love for yourself.” This amply testifies that, contrary to general misperception, religions can be part of the solution to unite humanity in the common bonds of fraternity and respect for human dignity.

Accordingly, the IPHRC strongly believes that religions are strong enablers of respect and reconciliation among all human beings and that most of the social ills and identity related challenges faced by humanity can be addressed through intercultural and interfaith dialogue. Towards this spirit, OIC-IPHRC has supported international and regional initiatives for promoting and protecting the respect for diversity of faiths and religions. IPHRC also stands ready to join hands with all interested organizations in initiatives that are aimed at countering ideologies of bigotry and obscurantism as well as promoting peace and harmony within societies.
