IPHRC Message on ‘International Human Rights Day 2015’ – Calls upon all to uphold their human rights obligations and to ensure protection and promotion of all human rights for all worldwide

Date: 12/10/2015

OIC Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission (IPHRC) joins the international community in observing the ‘International Human Rights Day’, and calls upon all stakeholders in the International community to uphold their human rights commitments and to increase their efforts to ensure protection and promotion of all human rights worldwide.

In a year that marks the 70th anniversary of the United Nations, the Human Rights Day is devoted to the launch of a year-long campaign for the 50th anniversary of the two International Covenants on Human Rights: the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which were adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in December 1966.

Along with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, these two covenants form the International Bill of Human Rights providing an important framework to promote and protect human rights worldwide. Most OIC Member States are party to these international covenants and regularly submit their periodic reports on the compliance of these instruments to the relevant treaty bodies. IPHRC called upon all Member States to make renewed efforts during this year long campaign to guarantee the rights enshrined in these Covenants to all their people without any discrimination. It also called for universal ratification of these Covenants.

Universal acceptance and implementation of the set of rights covered in these two covenants pave the way for equal opportunities and equal treatment thus creating a world where all human rights are enjoyed by all. IPHRC strongly believes in universality of human rights and has been actively promoting their universal application for all with due respect for cultural and religious particularities. It has unequivocally pronounced itself on range of important contemporary issues such as discrimination based on race or religion, combating and condemning extremism and terrorism while rejecting its linkage to any religion or culture, protection of family values, freedom of expression and hate speech as well as importance of human rights education in building tolerant, respectful and peaceful societies.

IPHRC reminded the International community that millions of people across the world are suffering from intensifying conflicts, which undermine their basic human rights and create complicated political and socio-economic realities. These tremendous challenges must be faced with cooperation, partnership and dialogue among all stakeholders with full respect for the human rights and human dignity of all peoples from all nations. International cooperation and solidarity must be the norm to promote and ensure universal realization of all human rights for all with Right to Development, both at the national and international levels, anchored as the central piece of this cooperation, IPHRC added.
