IPHRC Strongly condemned the dastardly attack on innocent civilians in the City of Khan Sheikhun in Syria


IPHRC strongly condemned the reports of a chemical attack on the city of Khan Sheikhun in Idlib the southern Province of Republic of Syria on 4 April, which resulted in over 50 people being killed and hundreds being injured. Most of the affected people are innocent civilians including children.

While expressing its heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims as well as strong wishes of speedy recovery to the injured, IPHRC affirms that such dastardly attacks have no place in the teachings or traditions of any of the religion, culture or civilization. The Commission also recalled that according to International human rights and humanitarian law, use of chemical weapons and deliberate targeting of medical facilities amount to war crimes and serious violations of human rights law. Perpetrators of such attacks must be identified and held accountable.

IPHRC supported the call made by H.E. Yousef Othaimeen, Secretary General of the OIC, on the international community, in particular the UN Security Council, to take firm and urgent measures to put an end to the bloodshed in Syria and to ensure protection of the Syrian people. All stakeholders must make sincere efforts to expedite the ongoing peace process that should lead resolving the conflict in accordance with the aspirations of the Syrian people in an independent and democratic manner.
