Protecting and Promoting Human rights in the Muslim World and Beyond

IPHRC strongly condemns the continued violence and blatant aggression committed by the Israeli occupation forces upon the unarmed innocent Palestinians protesting against the closure of Al Aqsa Mosque and denying them the right to freely practice their religion.

The OIC Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission (IPHRC) is appalled by the loss of precious lives and injuries to hundreds of innocent Palestinians as a result of the indiscriminate and disproportionate use of violence by the Israeli occupation forces to quell the peaceful protests of the Palestinian Muslims against the arbitrary and illegal measures to close the Al Aqsa Mosque and denying them the right to freely practice their religion, a right guaranteed to them by international law. There is absolutely no justification for this senseless Israeli criminality which must be stopped immediately and those responsible must be held accountable.

OIC-IPHRC’s in its press release of 16th July squarely condemned the closure of Al Aqsa Mosque and affirmed that it was in contravention of relevant international law instruments including the Fourth Geneva Conventions, with the potential to inflame the religious sentiments of not just Palestinian but all Muslims. To add insult to the injury, Israel, the occupying power, instead of respecting the historical and legal status of the Al Aqsa, has resorted to violent measures which are pushing the matter into a religious confrontation, affecting Muslims all around the world with dangerous repercussions for the regional and international peace and security.

The IPHRC reiterates that the recent Israeli measures are in stark contravention to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and Fourth Geneva Convention, which guarantee freedom of religion and access to places of worship without any obstruction or limitation. IPHRC, therefore, calls upon the International community in particular the United Nations Security Council, the UNESCO and other relevant organizations to take all necessary measures to fulfil their legal and moral obligations in forcing the Israeli authorities to respect the civil, political, economic, cultural and religious rights of the Palestinian Muslims as well as to hold responsible all those who perpetrated the violence.

IPHRC also welcomed the Communique issued at the end of the meeting of Permanent Representatives of OIC Member States held today in Jeddah and, while appreciating the resolve and steadfastness of the Palestinian Muslims to bear the ongoing brutalities, rejected all Israeli measures to alter the historic status quo in Al Quds which include recent installation of surveillance cameras and metal detectors aimed at violation of its identity, stature and religious and spiritual sanctity of the third holiest site in Islam. It also called upon all OIC Member States to firmly stand against the illegal Israeli measures and to extend all out moral, political and humanitarian support to their Palestinian brethren to face the ongoing challenges with resolve and steadfastness.

Later in the day, Dr. Tayseer Jaradat Deputy Foreign Minister of the State of Palestine also visited the IPHRC Headquarters and briefed its Executive Director Mr. Marghoob Butt on the ongoing human rights violations resulting from the Israeli actions. While expressing solidarity with the Palestinians, Mr. Marghoob Butt reiterated IPHRC’s firm rejection of the ongoing illegal Israeli actions and called for their immediate withdrawal including removal of electronic gates and cameras as well as full and free access to Al-Aqsa Mosque for regular prayers.
