The OIC Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission (IPHRC) strongly condemns and squarely rejects the announcement made by the US President to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and the orders to shift the US Embassy there, as an illegal unilateral act that not only contravenes the international law including the Fourth Geneva Convention but a host of UN Security Council, General Assembly and Human Rights Council Resolutions, which affirm the status of Al-Quds as an occupied territory by Israel the occupying power since 1967. IPHRC also cautioned against the unwarranted consequences of this reckless decision on the peace and security of the Middle East as well as undermining the prospects for a Two-States solution, which has been the cornerstone of a possible lasting solution in the Arab – Israel conflict.
The Commission expressed serious concerns on the overwhelming negative consequences of this decision on the whole range of Palestinians’ human rights including their fundamental right to self-determination as well as its potential to incite hatred, discrimination, extremism and violence at the global scale. Further the IPHRC warned against any Israeli attempts to use this illegal announcement as an additional pretext to undermine the status and identity of the Occupied Jerusalem as the Third Islamic holy Site and its significant value as such for around two billion Muslims across the globe. In this context, IPHRC also recalled all the UNESCO decisions on the City of Al-Quds and its Walls, which deny any Israeli sovereignty over Al-Quds and declares as illegal any changes caused by the Israeli occupation in the Old City of Al-Quds and its environs.
While reaffirming the absurdity and void character of any illegal text or announcement to recognize Al Quds as the Israeli capital, which goes against the well-established historical facts as well as international norms and agreements, the Commission called upon the UN Security Council to squarely reject this illegal move by the United States, and to reiterate the international consensus on the status of Al-Quds, as a corner stone of any sustainable peace solution in the region. It should also give full guarantee for the status of the Haram of Al-Aqsa Mosque and its full protection from any kind of Israeli action or procedures aimed at changing its status.
To this end, the IPHRC welcomed the decision of the OIC to call for an emergency Summit in Istanbul next week that would help mobilize the required political pressure against this decision as well as chalk out a comprehensive strategy that will strengthen the political, economic, and diplomatic support, at all levels, to the Palestinian people in their struggle to exercise their inalienable right to self-determination for the establishment of their own independent, viable and contiguous state, with Al -Quds Al-Shareef as its capital including their unquestionable right to return to their homes and property, as decided in various UN Resolutions, and guaranteed by International law.
